Window into the South African landscape, 1994

Earthlings, 2006 Mullins’ new show, Earthlings, is an evolution of the ideas tackled in his previous show, Ends and Escapes. The title piece is a 15min oil paint and stop-frame animation, which features musical excerpts from Braam Du Toits’ Trip Stories, performed by the Sontonga String Quartet. Also on the exhibition are large oil paintings, including Mergers and Acquisitions, 260x 360cm, and eighty small canvases titled, Evidence of Life. The small works site Mullins’ characters in blurred and undefined spaces, the content ranging from tender communications and small heroics to the starkness of the bleak hangman images. In Mullins’ large works, mark-making itself is the means by which the anxiety provoked by time and its subsequent shadow of loss are registered. These works are overlaid by quirk and humour, and the sub-text of games such as noughts and crosses becomes a digestible distillation of the recognition of our own limited time.
