Last One Standing, 2010, Artspace, Johannesburg
Last One Standing is Tanya Poole’s latest series of work. Taking as her starting point the idea of unsustainable dualities, she uses, as a visual analogy, an imaginary series of fights between karateka (those who practice karate) and animals. These images are a playful narrative on our tendency to seeing the world in a context of polarities, to dominate rather than to engage. These are cautionary tales, a reminder that what we seek to dominate, we often end up destroying.
